Eu sou com fome.Eu estou com fome.
Ser is for permanent qualities, estar for states. Hunger is a state. English speakers reach for ser by default because it feels like the "main" verb to be.
Eu gosto o café.Eu gosto do café.
Gostar always takes de, which then contracts with the article: de + o becomes do. Dropping the preposition is the single most frequent error in learner Portuguese.
Eu vou para a casa.Eu vou para casa.
Casa takes no article when it means your own home. Small, invisible in speech, and a reliable marker that the writer is translating from English.
Se você quer, nós podemos ir.Se você quiser, nós podemos ir.
A conditional se clause about the future takes the future subjunctive, which does not exist in English or Spanish. Learners coming from Spanish miss this one especially often.
Eu conheço nadar.Eu sei nadar.
Saber is for skills and facts, conhecer for people and places. English collapses both into "know", so the split has to be learned deliberately.
- Does this work for both European and Brazilian Portuguese?
- Yes, and they are treated as separate varieties rather than one language with a preferred standard. Pick the one you are writing in and corrections follow that variety, so Brazilian gerund constructions are not rewritten into European infinitive ones, or the other way round.
- Is this Portuguese corrector free?

- How is this different from a normal grammar checker?
- A grammar checker fixes the sentence. This explains why the sentence was wrong, in English, so the correction becomes something you can apply next time. It also gives you coaching on what you wrote and a score for grammar, verbs and vocabulary, which a checker does not do.
- Can it help with the subjunctive?
- Yes, and the future subjunctive in particular, which is where most learners lose the thread because there is no English equivalent to map it onto. Corrections name the tense and say what triggered it, rather than just supplying the right form.
