Questions about language journaling?
Everything you might want to know about building a journaling habit in your target language, and how Bonjournal helps you do it with AI-powered feedback.
About Language Journaling
Is journaling in a foreign language a good way to learn?
Yes, it's one of the most effective ways to build real fluency. When you write about your own life, thoughts, and feelings in your target language, you're forced to actively produce language rather than passively consume it. That's the difference between recognizing a word in a textbook and actually being able to use it in a sentence.
Journaling also creates a personal emotional connection to the vocabulary you use. Writing about your morning, your frustrations, your weekend plans — these are words and phrases you'll actually need in real conversations. Research consistently shows that the combination of personal relevance and active recall is what makes language stick. You create a personal context with the language, which unlocks deeper understanding and retention.
Bonjournal was born out of exactly this practice. The founder started journaling in Portuguese and noticed faster progress than years of traditional study had produced.
What should I write about in my language learning journal?
Anything that's on your mind. The best journal entries come from writing about what you'd naturally think about anyway: how your day went, something that annoyed you, a meal you enjoyed, a plan you're making, a memory that came up, something that's on your mind.
If you're stuck, Bonjournal sends you a daily writing prompt to get started. But the real secret is that it doesn't matter much what you write about. What matters is that you write regularly and get feedback on what you wrote. The topic is just the vehicle — the actual language practice is the destination.
Some ideas to get you started: describe your morning routine, write about a movie or show you watched, explain your job to a stranger, write a restaurant review, or describe your hometown to someone who's never been there.
How often should I journal in my target language?
Daily is ideal, even if it's just a few sentences. Consistency beats volume every time. Five sentences a day, every day, will do more for your language skills than a 500-word essay once a month.
That said, don't let "daily" become a barrier to starting. If you write three times a week, you're still building a habit that most language learners never develop. Bonjournal tracks your writing streaks and history so you can see your consistency at a glance. The visual record is surprisingly motivating.
I'm a beginner — is it too early to start journaling in another language?
Not at all. Your first entries might be three sentences long with half the words looked up in a dictionary — and that's perfectly fine. "Today I ate breakfast. It was good. Now I am tired." is a completely valid journal entry when you're starting out.
The point isn't to write beautifully from day one. It's to practice producing language at whatever level you're at. The AI corrections you get back will meet you where you are, and over time, you'll be able to look back at your early entries and see just how far you've come. That progress is visible proof that the practice works.
About Bonjournal & How It Works
How does Bonjournal work?
You write a journal entry in your target language, then submit it for a full AI analysis.
The AI gives you three things: a corrected version of your entry with all changes highlighted, a list of each correction with an explanation of why it was wrong and how to remember the correct form, and personalized coaching feedback — not just on your grammar, but on your expression, tone, and language growth.
Your entries and corrections are saved in your history, where you can track your writing consistency and revisit past entries to see your improvement over time.
What languages does Bonjournal support?
Bonjournal currently supports Spanish, French, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, and several others. The AI analysis works with any language that major language models can handle well, which covers most widely-studied languages.
If you don't see your target language listed, reach out — adding new languages is straightforward and we're always expanding based on what users need.
Can I try Bonjournal before creating an account?
Yes. You can write a journal entry and get a preview of the AI corrections directly on the homepage — no account needed. You'll see the first correction with its explanation, plus a preview of the AI coaching feedback. Creating a free account unlocks the full analysis and lets you save your entry history.
How much does Bonjournal cost?
Bonjournal has a free plan that includes 10 entries per month with full AI corrections and coaching feedback. That's enough for most people to build a consistent practice.
If you want to write daily, the Daily plan is $5/month for 30 entries. The Pro plan is $10/month for unlimited entries. You can start free and upgrade whenever it makes sense for your practice.
AI Corrections & Feedback
Can AI really correct my writing in another language?
Yes, and it's gotten remarkably good at it. Modern language models can catch not just spelling and grammar errors, but also unnatural phrasing, false friends (words that look similar between languages but mean different things), incorrect verb conjugations, and subtle issues with register and tone.
Bonjournal uses AI to go beyond what traditional grammar checkers do. A tool like LanguageTool or Grammarly can catch rule-based errors, but AI can tell you that while your sentence is technically correct, no native speaker would phrase it that way, and then show you how they would say it instead. That's the difference between grammar checking and language coaching.
Why not just use ChatGPT to correct my journal entries?
You absolutely can, and that's actually how Bonjournal started. The founder used to paste journal entries into ChatGPT with a custom prompt asking for corrections and coaching. It worked, but it was friction-heavy: copy the entry, open ChatGPT, paste the prompt template, paste the entry, wait, then try to save the response somewhere useful, try to find your previous entry with feedback as reference, and so on.
Bonjournal wraps that entire workflow into a purpose-built experience. You write in a focused editor, get corrections in a structured format that's easy to review, and everything is saved and tracked automatically. You get writing streaks, a history calendar, and progress tracking. These are things you'd never maintain with a ChatGPT conversation. It's the difference between cooking a great meal from scratch every night and having a kitchen that's already set up and prepped for you.
Compared to Alternatives
How is Bonjournal different from Duolingo or other language learning apps?
Completely different purpose. Duolingo and similar apps teach you language through structured lessons, gamified exercises, and repetition drills. They're great for building foundational vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
Bonjournal is for applying that knowledge. It's where you practice producing real, personal language, which is the step most language learners skip because there's no easy way to do it and get feedback. The two approaches complement each other: use Duolingo to learn new grammar patterns, then use Bonjournal to practice actually using them in your own writing.
Can't I just use a notebook and have a tutor correct it?
You absolutely can, and that's a great approach if you have access to a tutor. The challenge is that tutors cost $20–60/hour, availability is limited, and turnaround time means you might wait days for feedback. That delay weakens the learning connection between writing and correction.
Bonjournal gives you detailed corrections and coaching feedback in seconds, available 24/7, for a fraction of the cost. It's not meant to replace a tutor entirely, it's meant to fill the gaps between tutoring sessions with daily practice that would otherwise go uncorrected.
Is there an app like Bonjournal for speaking practice?
Bonjournal focuses specifically on writing, which exercises different (and often undertrained) language skills. For speaking practice with AI, tools like Gliglish and various ChatGPT voice features are worth exploring. Writing and speaking complement each other. Many users find that the vocabulary and sentence patterns they practice in writing naturally show up in their speech.
Privacy & Data
Is my journal private?
Yes. Your journal entries are personal and only visible to you, and stored securely and encrypted. We don't use your writing to train AI models, we don't share it with third parties, and you can delete all your data at any time. Journaling requires trust, and we take that seriously. You can read our full privacy policy for details.
Can I export my journal entries?
This is on the roadmap. We understand that your writing is yours, and being able to export it is important. If this is a priority for you, let us know — user feedback directly shapes what we build next.
